Für Einsteiger und Fortgeschrittene.

"3D Creature Workshop" von Bill Fleming richtet sich an Einsteiger und Fortgeschrittene und vermittelt die Grundlagen des Character Modelings. Positiv: viele verschiedene Herangehensweisen, die programm-unspezifisch funktionieren (auch in LW funktioniert der A:M-Ansatz!), dazu kurze Tips zum Animieren und ein sehr ausführliches Kapitel bezüglich der Texturierung von komplexen Kreaturen. Die Ergebnisse sprechen für sich ! Negativ: man benötigt zumindest für die MAX-Tutorials PlugIns (Surface Tools), die LightWave MetaNURBS werden lediglich am Rande erwähnt (Fleming beschränkt sich auf MetaFORM-Modeling), genauso wie die LightWave-Splines. Vielleicht ein bischen zu teuer für das Gebotene, aber prinzipiell jedem Interessierten als Grundlage zu empfehlen.

Creature design is a tough little business.

It seems that this book has had mixed reviews as to how useful it is. By and large, creature design and building 3D creature models is a tough little business. Reading this book alone will not get you instant results in creature making, it provides insight into how Bill Fleming does it, but you can't expect to become an expert without a lot of practice. The book itself does provide good foundations into spline modelling and polygon modelling and it is interesting to see one method of modelling creatures. I must admit that in trying to copy the walk-throughs, I was at a loss, with each successive attempt I got better but still I had difficulty making my own creatures. I know the methodology, its just applying them. And like everything it takes practice. The book will give you a good idea on how to get going, but you'll need to put in a lot of work yourself too. Having looked at books in Japan on similar subjects, the modelling methods used are very similar although there are some minor differences. By and large this book is a good starting point to introduce you to creature modelling, but its going to take a lot of practice to get anywhere.

Fantastisch.

Ich liebe dieses Buch, wenngleich ich auch nur über 3D Studio Max verfüge, sind die Tips und Tutorials wirklich nützlich. Sicher kann man sagen die Funktionen im einzelnen hab ich auch schon gesehen, aber so will Bill einen Workflow aufbaut ist das wirklich überzeugend.

Two thumbs down!

The cover looks good but that is about it. You need expensive plug-ins to follow the tutorials.

Rather than staying on point and sticking to the technical issues he goes out of his way to write in a very conversational style. A lot of "let's take a minute and stretch our legs before we begin on the next chapter?" type of stuff.

But worse, if you want color versions of the black & white illustrations in the book, and the accompanying 3D mesh and map files to follow along with his examples, you have to download all 30MB of them from his publisher's website. In the final analysis, I will not buy anymore of Bill's books. The content was weak.

Great book, but not perfect.

This book goes far beyond the scope of "awesome". The examples and tutorials in this book are amazing to say the least. I am a 3D Studio MAX user and fairly beginner as well. After reading the book several times through, I set out to try the tutorials. The first 3DSMAX tutorial was boggling to me, if you are not familiar with b-splines and patches, consider working with them before you get this book. After about 3 hours, I was handling patches quite well. I had learned to make a virtual studio, lay out patches, and form them to match my outline. The book shows you how to do the work, and the rest is just experimentation. After using the 3DSMAX tutorials, I went on and tried the A:M and LW tutorials. I'm happy to say that with a few extra plugins, easily found on the 'net, one can easily do in MAX what others can do in the other tutorials. How exciting. Still, the book has some of it's own faults, and can be confusing at times, if you are a true beginner.
