„MediaFotografie - analog und digital. Begriffe, Techniken, Web“

If you have ý50 to spend on a photo book, spend on this one.
The author Professor Thomas Walter holds a doctor degree in physics and is an instructor teaching computer science in a German college. I visited his photography lecture. At the beginning of the semester as he was recommending this book, I did not want to get it. What I expected was something like Dr. Philip Greenspun's online tutorial on photo.net. But it turned out totally different. This book is amazingly scientific and academic, yet extremely up-to-date. The history of photography is well documented with dozens of historical pictures, which cannot be easily gathered with several googlings. Then, a whole _lot_ of physics and chemistry explaining the science of photography, which cannot be found in Dr.Greenspun's tutorial, are presented, with solid college/graduate level math and all kinds of analytical charts like those produced by Matlab/Simulink. If you are an electrical engineer you'll be happy too, this book really goes into considerable details on hardware construction of sensors and chips for an state-of-art digital camera, you see your familiar digital circuits, transistors....That said, you might be scared off if you are no tech-nerd. But wait a second, all the highly technical thing is only half the content of this book. There are practical instructions on how to enhance a picture with tools like GIMP, Photoshop, Jennifer....(Prof. Walter is the supervisor of the Jennifer project) and how to effectively publish your photo album on web (Prof. Walter is also an experienced instructor on Perl, PHP, fast CGI, JavaScript...). There are hundreds of quality images in this book, illustrating the theory and techniques. The layout of this book is simply beautiful, stylish and artistic.
In short, this book is technically rock solid and scientifically substantial, you really _learn_ a lot while reading along. Yet practical, not just theory. For "artistic" aspects of photography, the well established Greenspun online tutorial is so much better than most of printed books. You can just read it for free. However if you are really serious about photography and want to get a solid reference book, this one should be _the_ book you invest on and you are not likely to get disappointed.
Now the semester ends, I have this book and will keep it on my bookshelf. :)
